Bethesda’s announcement of their upcoming Indiana Jones game set the Internet on fire and pissed off every Playstation fan on the planet.
Microsoft shocked the gaming world when they acquired Bethesda and all of their game studios. MachineGames, ID Software, Bethesda Game Studios, etc. They own them all. MachineGames is developing the newly announced Indiana Jones project and Playstation fans are furious right now.
They’re demanding that this game be cross-platform and come to the PS5 because “gatekeeping exclusives is a bad thing” all of a sudden. If gatekeeping big exclusives is a bad thing then why is Spider-man still exclusive to Playstation? Why are Final Fantasy 7 remake AND Final Fantasy 16 exclusive to Playstation? Why did Sony try and buy Starfield, but backed out because they couldn’t afford it?
It’s only okay when Sony gets exclusive games to their platforms. Sony gamers are quick to tell Xbox fans how many games their platforms have and how the Xbox only has Gears, Forza, and Halo. Now that things are changing with the acquisition of Bethesda among many other first-party developers that they already have people are backpedaling and demanding that every exclusive that Microsoft announces be available on PS5 because “no one wants an Xbox”.
It’s funny how the tables are turning. Microsoft is in a lose/lose situation here. They lost last gen because they had “no exclusives” and they’re still losing because people want their exclusives on Playstation.
The argument has moved from Xbox has no games to “it’s not fair that this is an Xbox game”. If you want to play the majority of Bethesda’s games you’ll either need to build a good PC (which costs more than a Series X) or buy a Series X in order to play. Indiana Jones will undoubtedly be on Game Pass on day one and many, many people will enjoy the game. Game Pass has proven that it is sustainable and I think Microsoft has proved that they don’t need to put games on the PS5 to make money. Look at how well their first-party games have performed on Steam. Microsoft does not need Sony to make its acquisition of Bethesda profitable.
So if you want to play the latest and greatest Bethesda games you’ll need to play them on an Xbox or PC. Sorry Playstation gamers.
