Minecraft Dungeons is one of the worst dungeon crawlers I played this year with very little going for it.
Minecraft Dungeons is Minecraft’s take on being a proper dungeon crawler. That means it’s competing with games like Path of Exile, Diablo III, and Moonlighter on Xbox One. Don’t even get me started on all of the dungeon crawlers on PC. Wolcen, Grim Dawn, Titan Quest, Torchlight, Vah Helsing, etc. They’re all better than Minecraft Dungeons and it’s not even close. Minecraft Dungeons doesn’t do anything better than any of the games I mentioned. The gameplay is below average, the loot (and this is an important one) sucks, and the campaign is terrible. The “end game” isn’t much better and the fact that there are no skill trees in a fucking dungeon crawler was the icing on the cake for me. Enchantments are supposed to be something unique that acts as skills in Minecraft Dungeon, but, honestly, they’re terrible.
I had to force myself to finish this game. I was ready to call it quits 3 hours in because once I felt like I had experienced all this game had to offer in that short amount of time. If the loot was interesting I probably would’ve stuck around a little longer. Or this game had some awesome looking skills or even a passive skill tree I could’ve crafted a completely unique character for myself as I did in Path of Exile. No two characters in that game will ever be the same. Minecraft Dungeons isn’t even a game I could recommend for newcomers to this genre. That title still goes to the Torchlight series. Torchlight is the perfect dungeon crawler for newcomers because it’s not overly complicated and is really easy. Minecraft Dungeons is also super easy, but it has nothing that makes a good dungeon crawler. You would go from playing this game to something simple like Torchlight, or something more extreme like Grim Dawn, and be completely lost.
Minecraft Dungeons had no interesting zones to explore, bosses to fight, loot to find, or end game content and that’s pretty much everything I look for in this genre. A good, or decent story, is just an added bonus which is why I liked Wolcen so much. I know the argument some people will make. “Minecraft Dungeons is more approachable” or “it’s meant for kids to enjoy”. I watched my kids complete Diablo III. They came up with their own builds and everything and even they didn’t like Minecraft Dungeons. All 4 of em. So that “it’s for kids” argument isn’t going to fly with me. A video game is for everyone. Minecraft Dungeons was targeted at everyone and failed to deliver the basics of what a dungeon crawler is and that’s why it’s so high up on my list. Minecraft Dungeons did nothing for me. It didn’t tick any of the boxes of what I look for in a dungeon crawler and I didn’t enjoy a single moment of it.

Top 10 Worst Games of 2020
Hi,
I’m Omar. I’m the founder of drakulus.com and the new founder of Petescorner.net. I cover every type of game genre there is and I’m using all of the skills I learned over the last 7 years working on Drakulus to make Pete’s Corner the best it can be. My favorite types of games are strategy, RPGs, and Shooters. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy other types of genres. Those are just my top 3. You can expect my brutally honest opinion on what I think of games in long reviews, editorial pieces, and game news coverage.
