One of the Playstation 5’s launch titles is next up on my top 10 worst games of 2020!
Counterplay Games promised to develop a brand new IP in a brand new genre that they called the “looter slasher” in Godfall. The term looter slasher never took off with anyone because it sounded ridiculous and for the simple fact that all a “looter slasher” is nothing more than an ARPG. Godfall is Diablo, but instead of playing in an isometric view, you have full control of the camera and your character. The only difference is Diablo is a good game and Godfall… well… Godfall isn’t. Godfall has so many problems and really solid gameplay. For starters, it’s really boring. The gameplay loop in Godfall is not fun at all. The entire game is basically played in a single room. Every cutscene and 80% of the dialogue takes place in a single room. Upgrading your gear, playing as different Valorplates, etc. All of it is done in a single, boring room. Valorplates are the most disappointing thing in the game.
What’s the point of having all of these different Valorplates when they don’t do anything. I like comparing Valorplates to Warframes because they look so similar to each other. The big difference is you know when you unlock a new Warframe you’re getting something completely different than what you were using before. Ember is going to play a lot differently than Mag. In this game, Valorplates are only cosmetic skins for your character with a small passive buff. There’s no point in using them all. Just use whatever looks the coolest to you and call it a day because none of them have any special abilities. I mean… you ONE ability that I would hardly call special because it’s shared with other Valorplates. Some plates can summon turrets that shoot enemies, but it’s not exclusive to that Valorplate because there are a few more that do the exact same thing.
Godfall is at its best when you’re not playing through the story. When you’re mindlessly slaying enemies in linear missions. The open zone exploration added absolutely nothing to the game and only served to slow the game down. The odd camera angles while fighting was also a pretty big distraction for me. Godfall was touted as this new, big IP from a developer that’s never made a big game before. The only other game that Counterplay Games made was a game called Duelyst and that game doesn’t even exist anymore. Godfall doesn’t do anything particularly well when compared to other games in its genre. Want a bunch of loot that’s actually useful? Play Diablo, Borderlands, or any other game in this genre and you’ll be good. Want to play a game with awesome melee combat? Dark Souls and Bloodborne says hi. I’ll even throw Nioh and Surge in there. That leaves Godfall as a master of nothing. The only thing this game does have going for it is that it looks really good.
Usually, a good story would make up for a game’s shortcomings. You won’t find a good or even decent story in Godfall. This game is all about the gameplay, but the way it’s designed does nothing but slow the gameplay up when it should be at the forefront. The biggest issue I have with the game, aside from the half-assed Valorplates, is the lack of multiplayer. You can only play multiplayer with people you know. The problem with that is no one I know was dumb enough to buy this game. There is no matchmaking in Godfall and that baffles me. Who doesn’t include matchmaking in a co-op game in 2020? This shouldn’t even be a requested feature. It should’ve launched with the game.
Godfall is a mess of a game that I tried my best to like. Even after I completed the game I stuck around with the hope that the end game would magically solve all of the issues I have with this game. I held out hope that once I unlocked the final Valorplate that it would make the grind I went through worth it. I hoped that there would be something for me to praise in this game outside of the graphics. And there’s not. Even the boss fights were an utter disappointment. This is a melee game that has bosses that do nothing but shoot at you. Now that I think of it a ranged valor plate would be a godsend in this game. Of course, I have zero faith in the developers to do anything worthwhile in this game. Godfall is the most disappointing launch game I’ve played since Ryse Son of Rome. Both games had their moments, but ultimately will be forgotten about as better games release on the current generation of consoles.
I played Godfall on PC.

Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris
Hi,
I’m Omar. I’m the founder of drakulus.com and the new founder of Petescorner.net. I cover every type of game genre there is and I’m using all of the skills I learned over the last 7 years working on Drakulus to make Pete’s Corner the best it can be. My favorite types of games are strategy, RPGs, and Shooters. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy other types of genres. Those are just my top 3. You can expect my brutally honest opinion on what I think of games in long reviews, editorial pieces, and game news coverage.
