I usually leave sports games off of my best and worst of lists because there’s very little innovation between the yearly releases. Madden 21 easily earned its spot because it’s nothing but a simple patch with the number 21 slapped on the cover of it.
EA has continued to ignore fan feedback for Madden and has given us arguably the laziest Madden game of all time with Madden 21. I’m a Franchise Mode guy and that’s always the only mode I play. There’s almost nothing more fun than getting a group of people together and going through Franchise Mode together. Especially if you get to play each other in the Super Bowl. Madden 21’s Franchise Mode is the exact same one from Madden 20. They added absolutely nothing to the game at all. No end game interviews, no half time show, nothing. They added absolutely nothing. It gets worse though. When you win a Super Bowl you get the EXACT SAME ending sequence that you got in Madden 20.
It was literally copied and pasted to Madden 21. You even saw the Madden 20 logo during some games because someone forgot to change it to Madden 21. The only thing EA seems to care about in Madden 21 is the microtransactions in their MUT mode. I will give them some credit for the new animations and improvements to the overall gameplay. Animations are smoother and I love how smooth everything felt, but I can’t in good faith give this game a pass when it’s 90% the same and only 10% new. It’s earned the hate from football fans across the world because it doesn’t do enough. It’s barely passable as a sequel to Madden 20 and I can only hope that EA allows the developers to do something fresh with this franchise.
Madden 21 is a game that I would only recommend if you can find it on a bargain shelf for $10. It’s lazy, half-assed, and shows that the developers don’t care enough to listen to their fans and make it better. I want to play a great football game. Not settle for the absolute minimum. Hopefully, the low user scores will convince them to at least try with their next game, but since Madden 21 sold really well (it outsold Madden 20) I think it’s safe to say that Madden 22 will most likely be more of the same. It should look really good since it should be a PS5/Xbox One/ and PC game though.
Now, I know the argument that you’re going to make. The “if you don’t like it why buy it” one. And you’re right. Do you know how I got Madden 20? At my local pawn shop for $8. I don’t buy my Madden games new, but I do buy them because I enjoy playing, and watching, American football. There’s nothing better than it to me, but I can’t sit here and call this a good game when it’s basically the same game we got last year with some new animations. And the gameplay IS good, but that doesn’t excuse the laziness that’s there and that’s why it’s in my top 5. I haven’t brought Madden 21 yet, but I’ve played plenty on my brother’s Playstation 4 and it was enough to convince me to stick with Madden 20 until Madden 22. If Madden 22 is like Madden 21 then I’ll probably wait until Madden 23.
I’m Omar. I’m the founder of drakulus.com and the new founder of Petescorner.net. I cover every type of game genre there is and I’m using all of the skills I learned over the last 7 years working on Drakulus to make Pete’s Corner the best it can be. My favorite types of games are strategy, RPGs, and Shooters. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy other types of genres. Those are just my top 3. You can expect my brutally honest opinion on what I think of games in long reviews, editorial pieces, and game news coverage.
