Marvel’s Avengers is the buggiest game I’ve played this year by far and you would think that the launch of Kate Bishop would’ve seen some improvement in performance and general stability of the game. Well… you would be wrong. Here’s what I thought of Kate after playing with her for a few hours today.
Everyone groaned in disappointment when Crystal Dynamics announced that Kate Bishop would be their first superhero added to the game as free DLC. Why? Because out of all of the famous Marvel superheroes you could add to an Avengers game I’m sure Kate wouldn’t crack the top 50 of most requested heroes to play as. That doesn’t mean that she’s a bad character because she’s not. I like Kate, but she added nothing to this game and she doesn’t even play that well when compared to the heroes that are already there.
She’s not even the best-ranged character in the game. Black Widow has that covered already. The only thing she has is the ability to teleport…
I’m really not hating on Kate because, as I mentioned above, I like her character. Well… not her character in this game, but her overall character in the comics. She’s really cool and it’s cool to see her in a mainstream video game. She doesn’t play terribly at all. She’s just not really all that great when compared to what’s already there now. And that’s a real shame. The first DLC for Avengers should’ve been something huge to get people talking about this game again. To get people interested in this game again. Instead, it’s just more of the same shit that no one wants to play outside of a few thousand players that’s remained loyal to it. It’s a very similar situation to Anthem.
The missions in this update are incredibly disappointing. It’s literally just the same shit you’ve been doing already. There’s nothing new here. There are no new locations. It’s the same recycled content that I’ve already experienced dozens of times over and it just isn’t enough for me to say that this game is good now. Does Kate Bishop play well? Yes, and no. Her melee is disappointing and it takes too long for her to charge up her shots with her bow when I would’ve dropped dozens of enemies with Black Widow’s pistols.
Yes, she has access to three different arrow types in a similar way that Iron Man and Black Widow, but she’s not as interesting as Black Widow in any way whatsoever. Her only gimmick is teleportation and I would rather do that with Nightcrawler. The only problem is Nightcrawler isn’t an Avenger and the odds of one of the X-men ever getting into this game is slim to none. This update is as bare-bones as it gets. There’s nothing new here to experience outside of a new, disappointing, fighting style that Kate Bishop brings to the table.

I do really like her new look and her costumes are a really good mix of sexy and badass, but her “story” (if you can even call it that) left much to be desired because of the lack of interesting environments, enemy variety, and, well…, story. Most of the dialogue takes place over the intercom and that’s not a good way to tell a story in my opinion. There are no awesome set pieces like in the campaign and that really would’ve helped elevate this update from mediocre to slightly above it.
Better luck next, guys.
Hi,
I’m Omar. I’m the founder of drakulus.com and the new founder of Petescorner.net. I cover every type of game genre there is and I’m using all of the skills I learned over the last 7 years working on Drakulus to make Pete’s Corner the best it can be. My favorite types of games are strategy, RPGs, and Shooters. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy other types of genres. Those are just my top 3. You can expect my brutally honest opinion on what I think of games in long reviews, editorial pieces, and game news coverage.
