Remember when Blizzard pissed off every Diablo fan on the planet when they announced that Diablo Immortal would be only playable on smartphones? Well, some new information has been revealed in that game including if you’ll have to pay for it or not.
A lot of information released on Diablo Immortal today. So let’s jump right into it, shall we?
People are a lot more positive for Diablo Immortal than they were when it first announced way back when. We now know that Diablo Immortal will be completely free to play. A free-to-play phone game is a cause for concern for a lot of people though. Including me, because they’re usually pay to win shitfest.
Wyatt Cheng, the lead designer of Immortal told the participants in a technical alpha pre-briefing this –
“We plan to have all content, all story, and all classes… be free,”
“Diablo Immortal will have in-game purchases that are not required for people to progress or to simply enjoy the game…”
Well… that’s good news. It remains to be seen if it’s true or not, but let’s take him for his word.
He followed up by letting everyone know how his team is approaching a free to play Diablo game
“First and foremost,” he said, “all of our gameplay systems and core mechanics are designed to be fun first and not circumvent Diablo’s core gameplay. The game is about killing monsters and getting gear and at Blizzard, gameplay comes first.”
“We want to ensure that players who choose not to spend money still have access to every piece of gear in the game as well.”
That last line is a big one because nothing would suck more than having to buy gear in an APRG off of an in-game cash shop. If this is true that’ll be huge for this game on mobile phones. Mr. Cheng also mentioned that there will be NO energy system in the game! That automatically makes it worth playing in my book. Nothing sucks more than getting into a decent phone game and then being forced to quit (Genshin Impact) because you ran out of energy.
Rifts Are Returning To Diablo, But With A New Name:
Rifts will be back in Diablo Immortal, but they have a new name now. Elder Rifts function the same as Rifts from Diablo III. You enter a randomized map filled with enemies and you kill them all to fill up a progress bar. Once you do you beat the boss and do it again. The big difference is you can add random modifiers by buying crest off of the cash shop. These crests will increase the chances of you getting better loot. This… could be a problem, but I’ll withhold judgment until I play the game for myself.
Challenge Rifts Are Different In Immortal:
In Diablo III, you had to use a fixed character to partake in a Challenge Rift. In Immortal, players use their own character and the Rift is randomized for every run. You’ll be tasked with working through multiple difficulty tiers for better rewards.
Zone Trials Will Give Players Something To Do Besides The Main Quest:
Zone Trails sound a lot like world bosses to me. Maybe I misunderstood, but it totally sounded like world bosses are coming to Diablo and that’s an exciting concept that will have every player in the zone team up to take on one big super boss. It sounds awesome.
Bounties Are In The Game:
Westmarch is where you’ll spend a good chunk of your time. It’s the main hub. It’s where you’ll socialize with other players and collect short quests called bounties. Bounties will task players with fighting monsters and gathering materials all over Sanctuary. Westmarch is also the place you’ll go to upgrade your equipment so you’ll most likely be spending more time here than killing monsters in the late game.
The Horadic Bestiary Adds Beast Hunts To The Game:
The Horadic Bestiary is a tome that’ll update itself when you slay certain beasts in the game. Defeating these monsters will unlock pages in this tome that’ll make you more powerful. In short, you’ll want to fill this book up.
All Gear Will Be Self Found
What does this mean, you ask? It means that the only way to obtain gear is by going out and getting it yourself from treasure chests, quest rewards, and monster drops. Gear can’t be purchased or traded with another player. That last part is a big bummer since I plan on playing this game with my wife.
Legendary Gems Will Make Your Character A Lot Stronger:
Each character in Immortal has 6 primary gear slots for equipment. Head, torso, shoulders, lower body, main hand, and off-hand. Each slot can have one legendary gem slotted. These gems will give you a wide range of powerful passive buffs to your character in a similar way to what we saw gems in Diablo III.
Normal gems are also in this game and can be slotted in secondary gear slots such as boots and rings. There are a total of six slots for secondary gear. In total there will be 12 slots for your gear.
You Can Break Down And Level Up Your Gear:
You’re obviously going to be swimming in all kinds of sweet loot in this game. You can break down your gear into components that can be used to enhance your favorite gear. Each rank will boost the stats of your gear. Every 5 levels will add a random bonus property. At level 20 (the max rank) that item will have 3 bonus properties. This will make your gear a lot stronger and that’s not even factoring in any of the gems you’ll have slotted in it.
If you don’t like the rolls on your weapon you can reforge it with a reforge stone. Reforge stones can be acquired through normal gameplay or through the cash shop.
Your 13th Gear Slot Is A Charm:
The 13th gear slot is a charm that’s purpose is to increase the rank of your skills. These charms will be powerful items that only dedicated players will see the most of. Meaning you’ll most likely have to grind your ass off for any real results.
The Paragon System Is Back And With Skill Trees:
The popular paragon system from Diablo III is back. Once you reach the level 60 cap you’ll unlock the paragon system. The big difference is that instead of slowly increasing your stats to insane levels you’ll have a brand new skill tree. Each skill tree will have a different play style. There’s not much known about this yet and once more information is released I’ll update this.
Diablo Immortal is much better than I ever thought it would be. If everything works as advertised you’ll have a great phone game to lose dozens of hours in. I was very skeptical about this because, well… it’s a fucking phone game, but it seems like this game will be jam-packed full of content and plenty of monsters to kill.
